Health App Simplifying Children’s Health Records

This project explores the visual design and branding of PediaPulse, a speculative project developed as part of the Google UX Design Professional Certificate program. The project serves as an exemplar of applying user experience principles to create a digital health record management app tailored for children's healthcare needs. As a spec piece, it demonstrates my ability to conceptualize and design a user-centered solution that addresses a significant need in the healthcare sector.

DISCLAIMER: Please note that this project is ongoing. As I progress through the course, I will continue to update this page with new insights, designs, and reflections. The information presented here is a snapshot of the project's current state, with more developments to come.

The project's core objective was to create a user-friendly, secure, and visually appealing platform that would resonate with parents and guardians while ensuring ease of access to their children's health information.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to design a visual identity that communicated trust, care, and innovation, all while being approachable and relatable to a diverse audience of parents. The app needed to stand out in a crowded digital health space, requiring a unique brand identity that could effectively convey its mission and values.

Research

A survey of parents and guardians revealed valuable insights into their interactions with and preferences for digital health management solutions. The majority of respondents were female, aged between 29 and 39, highlighting a demographic actively engaged in digital health tool usage. These individuals, responsible for one or two children, play a pivotal role in healthcare decision-making, either as primary decision-makers or in collaboration with others.

Access to technology was widespread, with most participants having multiple devices, indicating a robust potential for digital health tools to become integral in family health management. Engagement levels with these tools varied, from regular usage to complete inactivity, pointing to diverse user experiences and the opportunity for increased adoption.

Key to the appeal of digital health tools were features like accessible search functions, secure and easy login processes, clear navigation, and an intuitive user experience. Specific tools, such as HMS Genesis and the Family Album app, were noted for their user-friendliness, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and effectiveness in design.

Approach

The approach to the PediaPulse branding and visual design involved extensive research into the target audience's preferences and pain points. The project kicked off with the development of user personas, such as "Rory, the Busy Co-Parent" and "Anita, the First Time Mom," to guide the design process with real-world context and empathy.

Logo Design

The logo creation aimed to blend elements of pediatric care with digital sophistication. The chosen color palette of calming blues complemented by vibrant accents aimed to instill trust and appeal to both parents and children.

Typography and Color Scheme

The typography chosen for PediaPulse was friendly yet professional, ensuring readability across various devices and platforms. The color scheme, echoing the logo, used shades of blue for reliability and orange accents for a dynamic, energetic feel, aiming to make the app not just a tool but a part of the family's daily routine.

User Personas

  • Rory, Busy Co-Parent

As a busy co-parent, they want to manage their children’s records with their ex-husband so that their family can communicate more effectively.

Goal: Share upcoming appointments with co-parent.

  • Anita, First Time Mom

As a first time mom, she wants an easy digital solution to manage her child’s records, so that she can prepare to put her baby in daycare when she returns to work.

Goal: Download medical records to send to daycare.

  • Ethan, Security Minded Guardian

As a new guardian, he wants to create a safe digital environment so that his child’s information is secure.

Goal: Access medical records after a change in guardianship.
